The comprehensive performance of the cylinder such as pressure resistance, wear-resistance and fatigue strength, determines the service life of the hydraulic cylinder.   Stainless steel hydraulic cylinders are used in applications where corrosion resistance is the utmost priority with   stainless steel cylinder tube   and   piston rods . Standard cylinders are made from combinations of alloy steel, such as 1020,   1045   and   4140 , which are all susceptible to oxidation and rust in humid or wet applications.   Induction hardening  is a non-contact process used for the surface hardening of steel and other alloys. The parts to be treated are placed inside a copper coil and heated above their transformation temperature by applying an alternating current to the coil. The   cylinder rod   is then quenched to retain the enhanced properties of the steel alloy. During this process, the   induction hardened chrome rod   core remains unaffected and its physical properties remain the same.   4140 chrome cylinder rod   is used extensively by the hydraulic cylinder and pneumatic industries, and is employed by other industry sectors for a wide range of applications requiring higher strength. 4140 is a 1% Chromium - Molybdenum high tensile steel supplied in the hardened and tempered, cold drawn or turned, precision ground, polished, chrome plated and final polished condition, with a typical base metal tensile strength of 850 - 1000 Mpa, plus a typical  hard chrome plated surface hardness  of HV 1000 - 1150. Under the honing process, abrasive stones and paper are used to the ID of the tubes, which “grinds” stock away to remove surface imperfections from the cold drawing process; and to achieve the desired dimensional tolerances and surface finish.
